Project description

Despite promised culture changes bundled in a Models Health Pledge, the high fashion industry still requires models to have a 90 cm or less hip size. In order to walk on the catwalk, models need to have the ideal sizes. This production looks into the effects of these demands on models health.
To make sure the audience would understand how a 90 cm hip width compares to their own hip width; we\’ve compared the sizes of 1000+ models with the size of an average Dutch female in her twenties. For this is a NOS op 3 production (the part of the Dutch national news broadcast NOS that publishes news for 18 – 35 year olds) the YouTube-video is the centerpiece of the story.

What makes this project innovative?

The 25 model agencies in our selection publish the sizes of their models on their website. With the help of 25 different data scrapers, the data was collected. The infographic as seen in the video was made in Flourish Studio. We screen captured the white dots on a green background and used Adobe After Effects to key out the 'green screen', so we could make the infographic float in our studio. Other graphic elements, such as axis, typography and visuals were made with Illustrator and After Effects.

What was the impact of your project? How did you measure it?

The video on fashion models has aquired over 840.000 views, making it one of the best watched YouTube video by NOS op 3 so far. Next to that, with almost 1200 comments the video became the center of an online conversation on this topic. The Youtube-analyitics have shown that we succeeded in reaching a young audience. Most of our viewers were in the agegroup 18 to 30 years, making it our first investigative journalism-piece that reached a young audience. Member of parlement Anne Kuik asked the State Secretary for Public Health, Welfare and Sport Paul Blokhuis multiple questions concerning the health of models and the standards of the fashion industry. (See last link.) The State Secretary acknowledge the importance of the issues at hand, but explained he first wants to try and strenghten the Models Health Pledge before taking other actions.

Source and methodology

For the data analysis we looked at 25 modeling agencies. These are not all model agencies in the Netherlands. But based on conversations with fashion journalist Cécile Narinx and researcher Sylvia Holla, we think that this list contains the most important agencies. All model agencies in our selection publish the sizes of their models on their website. By building 25 different scrapers, we were able to collect the sizes of 1000+ models. Among other agencies, data was collected from the site of Favourite Models, Anki models, Touche Models, BM, and Ego's. The created dataset was than analysed using Google Spreadsheets and Excel.

Technologies Used

Choosing speed over complex methods, most scrapers were created using OutWit Hub scraping software. A couple website required more complex scrapers. These were written in the Python programming language, using Beautiful Soup, Requests and Regular Expressions. The data analysis was done using spreadsheet software, both Excel and Google Spreadsheet. The visualisations as included in the final YouTube video were made using Flourish Studio, Adobe Illustrator and After Effects.
