Project description

How the International Space Station grew to the size of a football pitch to become history’s most expensive manmade project.

What makes this project innovative?

The special project ""ISS: Iconic Service to Science"" is the most extensive history of the emergence and development of the International station. You can understand how much the station has grown over 20 years due to one of the main features on the main page — the interactive timeline of the ISS Assembly. For greater clarity, the key points - the first and last stage of the construction of the ISS - are given in comparison with a subway car and a football field.

What was the impact of your project? How did you measure it?

The project about ISS was presented at the Museum of cosmonautics in January 2019 at the meeting dedicated to the 50th anniversary of docking of the spacecrafts ""Soyuz-4"" and ""Soyuz-5"". The event was attended by legendary cosmonauts: twice Heroes of the Soviet Union Boris Volynov and Alexey Eliseev and Hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of Russia Sergey Krikalev.

Source and methodology

All data in the project, including the information about the chronology of the assembly of the International Space Station, were taken from NASA and Roscosmos, as well as from the portal of the US National Laboratory on the ISS. As a reference for a 3D model of the station, the work of infographists of SpaceCraftEarth was used.
