Project description

Through data, Rappler shows a snapshot of the population of the Philippines’ most heavily guarded and biggest prison facility amid a continuing crime crackdown under President Rodrigo Duterte. It shows not only the crimes committed by convicts, but also deeper aspects such as their religion, and their jobs before they were imprisoned.

What makes this project innovative?

Through charts and graphs, the story visualizes for the first time, the historic New Bilibid Prison of the Philippines, which for the longest time has only abstractedly been imagined as home of crime kingpins and drug lords.

What was the impact of your project? How did you measure it?

The story resets the tone in discussing the Philippines’ biggest prison not just a monolithic detention facility for convicts, showing the diversity of its inmates.

Source and methodology

The data was obtained through Bureau of Corrections sources.
