This project is part of a “Made in China 2025” series published by the SCMP Graphics team in 2018. It analyses how China plans to be a world leader in Artificial Intelligence by 2030. Artificial intelligence (AI) has come to occupy an important role in Beijing’s ‘Made in China 2025’ blueprint and China now has an edge over the US in terms of academic papers, patents and both cross-border and global AI funding.
What makes this project innovative?
Large sets of data were turned into simple diagrams, animation and illustration to help readers discover their own conclusions about the subject. We show all the areas where AI can be used and how it works in a way to make this complex subject easy to understand. Today’s practice in journalism recognizes abstract visualization as the usual way to show data, but illustration is also an effective way to present data. We use an interactive path to show how countries are in a race to take the lead in various areas of AI.
What was the impact of your project? How did you measure it?
Audiences for this project quickly surpassed 46000 views, spending over four minutes to read this visual story.
Source and methodology
The primary sources of data come from World Economic Forum, China Money Network, CBInsights, Tsinghua AI Report where we can analyse all the aspects about the plan of China to lead the AI world race in the future.
